Shetlands are an old breed, listed on the ALBC’s list as recovering. They were originally taken to the Shetland Islands by the Vikings and left there where the thrived on minimal forage making them a very hardy breed. In 1980, they were brought to North America from the Shetland Islands . The are a petite sheep, with the rams weighing no more than 125 lbs and ewes around 75-100. They are very sweet natured and easy to handle due to their small size. They are naturally short tailed so do not require tail docking-a plus to those raising them. Their wool is fine and valued by hand-spinners.

Icelandic Sheep
Three Creeks Farm has a small flock of registered Icelandic Sheep. These majestic animals were taken to Iceland by the Vikings 11oo years ago and remain the primary agricultural product for that country to this day. Because of their isolation, they are one of the purist breeds of sheep. Their wool is dual coated, producing a soft inner wool, Theil, and a strong outer wool called Tog. When spun together, it is called Lopi yarn.

Icelandics come in many colors and many patterns. They are naturally short tailed, so do not require tail docking. Although there are both horned and polled, most of our sheep are horned. They are gregarious and full of “personality”. We are members of the Icelandic Sheep Breeders of North America, (link is to the right) and the Canadian Livestock Registration Corporation (CLRC) in which  Icelandic sheep are registered.

Sheep For Sale

We have some beautiful sheep for sale. We hate to get rid of anyone, but we can’t keep them all. We handle all of our sheep so they love attention, and usually will run up to get their attention. All are registered unless specifically mentioned. We occasionally have a Shetland/Icelandic cross, but do not currently and will not have any more until spring. We breed to have our lambs born in April. Our primary objectives in our breeding program are wool quality and color, gentleness and confirmation in that order.
( this is still under construction, so bear with us)
