Beginning Soap Making – Sunday, November 9, 2025 – 1 to 4 PM

$75.00

You’ll learn all the basics of making your own handmade soap in this class, with each student getting hands-on experience and making their own batch of soap to take home. This beginning soap making class focuses on the cold process soap making method and students will have the chance to choose between fragrance oils and essential oils (or no fragrance at all) when crafting their soapy creations.

The first half of this class will focus on the science and safety of making your own soap; the second half of class will see each student make a 1 lb. batch of soap (about 4-5 bars). The class fee includes all ingredients as well as a reusable 1 lb. silicon soap mold that each student gets to use and take home and keep.

Our beginning soap making classes are designed to teach students all aspects of the soap making process — from the science and history behind making soap to working safely with lye to ideas for packaging and labeling.

Students will get to measure, mix and pour their very own soap batch, including picking a fragrance from the essential oils and fragrance oils we have available. Necessary safety equipment is provided and the lye solution used will be pre-mixed, so students will get to see a demo of safely mixing lye and water for a lye solution to make soap with but won’t have to do this step themselves in class.

All the topics discussed and recipes used in class will also be made available to students in a PDF so that they can reference later. Some additional soap recipes beyond the class recipe we’ll use are also included, with each designed to fit the 1 lb silicone mold that students receive to use in class and take home.

Our soap making classes tend to draw students from not just middle Tennessee (Clarksville, Dickson, Fairview, Bellevue, Nashville, Franklin and Murfreesboro) but we’ve also had some students make the trek from Memphis, Chattanooga and Knoxville.

Instructor Seth Shafer has been teaching soap classes for over a decade and enjoys the mix of science, practicality and fun that’s involved. Each batch is a little bit of magic when you combine oils and lye and voila: soap!
